Dear Sir or Madam,
FENWAY THE PUP · Chapter 5
The nor’easter came in sideways. By 9 p.m. the lights on the whole street were out, and the wind made the triple-decker groan.
Fenway didn’t like any of it. Maya clicked on a flashlight, opened the hall closet and took out a plastic bin labeled FENWAY in Sal’s handwriting. Inside were food, water, his medicine, a spare leash, a copy of his vaccination records, a photo, and the squeaky lobster he loved and pretended not to.
Fenway pushed his head into the bin, pulled out the lobster and lay on Sal’s feet. He’d been doing that since the fourth day. The storm went on all night. The dog slept through it.
End of season one.
The real tips: a pet emergency kit
From Ready.gov’s pet preparedness guidance:
- Food and water for several days, plus bowls and a manual can opener if you need one.
- Medications and copies of medical and vaccination records in a waterproof bag.
- ID: collar, tags, a registered microchip and a current photo of you with your pet.
- A leash, harness and carrier or crate.
- Comfort items such as a familiar toy or bedding to reduce stress.
- A plan: know which shelters and hotels on your route accept pets. On the coast, see GrandStrand.app’s storm checklist.
