Dear Sir or Madam,
FENWAY THE PUP · Chapter 4
The first real cold morning, Fenway walked three houses down, sat on the sidewalk and refused to go on. His coat, so practical in South Carolina, was no help against a November wind off the harbor.
Sal laughed so hard he had to lean on the fence. Then he went inside and came back with a small quilted jacket. He’d bought it the week before, “just in case,” and ironed an F onto the back.
Fenway let Maya put it on him, looked at himself in the storm door, and strutted the rest of the block like he was in a parade.
The real tips: cold-weather care
- Some dogs need a coat. Small, short-haired, senior and lean dogs lose heat fast. A well-fitted jacket helps. Double-coated breeds may not need one.
- Shorten walks in extreme cold and watch for shivering, lifted paws or reluctance to keep going.
- Look after paws. Wipe off road salt and de-icer after walks. Booties or paw balm can help.
- Antifreeze is deadly. It tastes sweet to pets. Clean up spills and store it out of reach. See the ASPCA’s cold-weather tips.
- Never leave a dog in a cold car. Cars hold cold as well as heat.
