Dear Sir or Madam,
FENWAY THE PUP · Chapter 3
Seventeen hours, four rest stops and a bag of cheese crackers Fenway wasn’t supposed to have. Maya’s family drove to the Grand Strand for a fall week, and Fenway rode with his head out the window from Virginia on.
His first look at the ocean confused him. It kept coming toward him. He barked at it, which didn’t help, then decided it was a very large, very slow squirrel and ran in after it.
That evening at Barefoot Landing, a dock worker gave him a water bowl and told Maya, “Off-season’s the best time to bring a dog down here. Summer has more rules.” Fenway, full of shrimp tails someone had dropped, didn’t care about rules.
The real tips: the beach with your dog
- Beach rules for dogs change by season and by town on the Grand Strand. Check the current rules before you go. GrandStrand.app has a guide: Myrtle Beach Beach Rules by Season.
- Bring fresh water and shade. Dogs shouldn’t drink seawater, and hot sand can burn paws.
- Rinse after. Salt and sand irritate skin and paw pads.
- Book pet-friendly in writing. Confirm the rental’s pet policy and any fees before you arrive.
- Pick dog-friendly stops. Some Grand Strand shopping areas welcome leashed dogs. See the weekend route in Grand Strand Season, Ep. 8.
